Lion's Mane

A promising mechanism — nerve growth factor support — with still-early human data.

Lion's Mane, a Honeypezil ingredient

Mechanism

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) contains compounds — hericenones and erinacines — studied for their potential to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) production. NGF is a protein involved in the growth, maintenance and survival of certain neurons, which is why a compound that might influence its production draws research interest for cognitive health.

What the evidence shows

This is the most preliminary ingredient in the formula. Some published trials show promising results on measures of cognitive function, but sample sizes tend to be small and the overall research base is nowhere near as large as it is for Bacopa or Ginkgo. Treat it as a scientifically interesting supporting ingredient, not a proven one.

Safety notes

Lion's Mane is generally considered well tolerated. Those with mushroom or fungal allergies should exercise caution, and pregnant or nursing individuals should consult a doctor before use, as with any new supplement.
